PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a powerful solution created from a small volume of your own blood. The power of PRP lies in the combination of platelets and plasma.

Platelets are the component of your blood responsible for clotting function. Your platelets are also filled with special proteins called growth factors that promote new cell development.

Plasma is the liquid component of your blood. It helps promote clotting and also supports your immune function. Plasma also acts to maintain optimal pH balance within your body.

How is PRP created?

The process begins with a simple blood draw, similar to the process of having blood work done at your doctor’s office. The blood is placed into a medical device called a centrifuge, which spins the blood until the solids separate from the liquids.

This allows your practitioner to isolate and remove the platelets before reintroducing them to the now-cleared plasma. This creates PRP, a powerful solution that reduces inflammation and speeds new cell production. The entire process takes very little time and is completed in-house during your visit.

What role does PRP play in skin care?

PRP helps your skin rejuvenate itself, hastening the development of collagen and other cell types. One way that PRP is used in skin treatments is via a series of shallow injections.

Your practitioner can inject small amounts of PRP into areas of your face where scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, or textural irregularities are present. The solution goes to work prompting new cell growth, which can smooth and renew your skin from the inside out.

PRP can also be incorporated into microneedling. This treatment creates thousands of microchannels into the deeper layers of your skin. Each of those channels allows PRP to penetrate deeply, where it promotes new collagen production.

Is PRP a safe treatment option?

Platelet-rich plasma is an incredibly safe and effective treatment option. Because PRP is created from your own blood, there is no risk that your body will reject the solution.

PRP is also used in numerous medical applications. A growing body of research supports the safety of this treatment in musculoskeletal applications.
