Plasma Pen Q & A
What is plasma?
Plasma is a state of matter, in the same manner as liquid, solid, and gas. Plasma is composed of positively charged ions present in the air. It’s often made by magnetizing a cloud of nitrogen into a beam.
Plasma is used in neon signs, fluorescent light bulbs, and certain televisions. Recent innovations have led to plasma being incorporated into skin treatments. These treatment platforms convert gas in the air into “diatomic molecular nitrogen.”
How is plasma used in skin treatments?
Plasma Pen treatments are also referred to as plasma fibroblast therapy. Your fibroblasts work to repair tissue damage. They increase elastin production, release growth factors, and remove cellular debris.
The Plasma Pen targets those fibroblasts. The treatment device is held slightly above the surface of the skin, and transmits a high-frequency electric current. This creates heat in the dermal layer of your skin. That heat leads to microtrauma injuries that prompt your body’s healing response. While plasma treatments don’t actually harm your body, they trigger a powerful regenerative effect that creates new collagen cells.
Collagen serves to smooth and plump your skin, leaving it more youthful and healthy. It can improve the appearance of wrinkles, discoloration, scarring, and textural irregularities. The Plasma Pen device also seals each entry into your dermal layer, so the risk of infection is very low.
What can I expect after Plasma Pen treatments?
A degree of minor swelling and tenderness is normal after Plasma Pen treatments. You might also notice tiny red dots in the treated areas. These marks will swiftly fade as your body moves forward in the healing process.
Take care to avoid sun exposure after Plasma Pen treatments, as your skin will be more sensitive to ultraviolet rays. In the days following your treatments, you may develop tiny scabs in the treatment area. Your skin may itch a bit as the healing process takes place. Take care to avoid picking or scratching your skin, which can mar your results.
It takes around 12 weeks for the healing process to be fully complete, but you’ll see results about seven days after your session. You can expect those results to last 2-5 years, depending on how well you take care of your skin.
